When playing blackjack, a player that is dealt two cards that hold the same value, such as two 8s, two 10s, or two face cards, or any other two cards that are the same, is allowed to ‘split’ their hand.
When clicking on split, the cards will now form two separate blackjack hands. A bet that is equal to the bet value before splitting is now placed on the second card, so that both hands have equal bets placed on them. When playing online, if you do not have enough credit to cover the extra bet, the option will simply not be available on the player’s screen.
Splitting may only be done once per hand, no matter what other cards are dealt to the player. Players may not double down after splitting, and when Aces are split, the rules are slightly different. Only one other card will be dealt to each of the Aces. If the second card is either a ten or a face card, the players will have achieved a value of 21, although this is not considered to be blackjack.
Players may have as many cards dealt on each of their split cards as they wish, apart from when the split card was an Ace. Each hand will be played out as a regular blackjack hand, with the player having the option to either hit or stand, as they see fit, based on the cards that have been dealt to each hand. Betting for each hand is done independently of the other hand.
