As one of the most common options used in blackjack, along with ‘hit,’ it is important
to understand what the ‘stand’ option is. When a player stands in blackjack, it means
that they are happy with the hand they have, and do not want to be dealt any more
cards. When a player stands, the rest of that hand will be played with the cards they
have already been dealt.
It is advisable to stand when your hand shows 17 or more points. There is an
exception, however, when holding a soft hand, one with an Ace, that you may choose
not to stand at this time. Apart from soft hands, a hand holding 17 or more points is
considered to be a good blackjack hand.
Most advise that when holding a hand of 16 or more, that the wisest move is to stand.
Standing at this time is to make sure you do not risk going bust, which is having a
hand that ends up with more than 21 points, since this will take you out of the game.
Those playing in land-based casinos can wave their hands sideways with palm down
over the cards that they have, when the cards have been dealt in a face-up game. If
the game is being played face-down, the player will simply slide their cards under
their bet while being careful not to touch the bet that has been placed. In online
casinos, the player simply presses the ‘stand’ button.
